Music & Chorus at Lanai Road is an integral part of our student’s complete learning experience. We have two general music teachers:
Nancy Endman (who has been teaching music at Lanai for 19 years) is funded by Friends of Lanai Booster and the PTA, and Sally Ahn,
who is provided by LAUSD. Ms. Ahn is at Lanai one day a week and teaches seven classes. Mrs. Endman teaches the remaining twelve
classes and also directs our Lower Grade Chorus and our Upper Grade Chorus.

Music: Each student receives one half hour a week of music instruction. Our curriculum includes note reading, rhythm skills,
instrumentation, movement, and performance. We work toward two all-school performances each school year. We have a Winter Program
in December where each class in the school performs. In the Spring, we have another all-school program where we feature our recorder
presentation. Every student in grades 1 through 5 receives instruction on a recorder. Recorders are provided for our students from our
PTA. A student’s recorder follows him from grade to grade. When a student culminates in fifth grade, they can keep their recorder. We
have found that the recorder program has been very successful in teaching students the techniques of playing and the care of an
instrument. Our students are able to read music, memorize music, and perform on their recorders.

Chorus: Our school has two choral groups under the direction of Mrs. Endman. The Lower Grade Chorus is available to students in
grades 1 & 2. The Upper Grade Chorus is for students in grades 3 thru 5. Chorus performs twice a year. Both Upper and Lower Grade
Chorus sing at our Winter Program in December. In the Spring, the Upper Grade Chorus performs at the recorder concert. The Lower
Grade Chorus performs at Open House. In addition, our chorus has been invited to sing outside of school. We have sung at Encino
Hospital, Barnes and Noble, a special awards dinner, and various shopping centers at holiday time.

Kinder Music Program: The kindergarten music program is slightly different than that for the rest of the school. Each class gets formal
instruction one half hour each week from either Mrs. Endman or Ms. Ahn. The program strongly emphasizes rhythm, instrumentation with
classroom percussion instruments, and movement. Our kindergarten has many opportunities to perform during the year. We try to
integrate the music program with the instructional program to maximize these opportunities. Students in kindergarten perform for
Halloween, Thanksgiving, President’s Day and kindergarten culmination as well as our all school programs in December and in the Spring.
Orchestra
Lanai Road Elementary School & Friends of Lanai Booster present The Lanai Road School Instrumental Music Program

Weekly classes are offered each Tuesday afternoon for students in grades 1 through 5 beginning October 6th, 2009. Instruction is
available on flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, trombone, violin and cello. First graders may only choose the violin. Students must be in at least
third grade to choose the sax or trombone.

The orchestra program requires a one-year commitment and regular home practice. Classes are held Tuesdays (early dismissal). All
grade 1 and grade 2 classes are held during regular school hours between 12:45 and 1:45 PM. All grade 3 through grade 5 classes are
held after school between 1:45 and 4:45 PM.

No musical experience is required to enroll in a beginning class. Classes run through the school year, culminating with a school orchestra
concert beginning June.

Class size is limited and priority is given to the earliest applicants.
Music Fees

Lanai Road School Orchestra program is largely funded by FOLB. A $20 music fee (which covers all music, books and basic supplies)
and a $180 supplemental instructional fee is requested to help fund this program. (This fee should not be considered part of your annual
giving for the "LoVE Fund" but is a supplemental fee used to fund this particular program.) The only other expense will be the lease, rental
or purchase of the instrument. (For instrument rentals, leases and purchases, visit www.stringseason.com)

A limited number of instructional scholarships are available to those who request them and every attempt will be made to see that ALL
STUDENTS who wish to participate are given the opportunity.
